Metempsychotic Modernists

Behind the blog… and Kino # 6

August 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Usually…on “Metempsychotic Modernists”, I’ve chosen to write critiques and film related stuff.  Rather than a “Dear Diary” vibe.

Well, let me give you a hint about what’s going on behind the scenes…

” Love is an untameable beast”.

And even the most controlled people can be devoured by it.

For instance, me.

That being said, last night was Kino # 6 run by Matt and Marianne at the Chalkhouse Gallery.

 And…as always…it was fun.

The ease and creativity and freedom of expression…engendered and encouraged by Kino is a delight….and rarity.

Why?

Because usually the institutionalisation and subsequent suffocation of culture imprisons this city.

Ok.  That last sentence came across like a Mussolini type rant.

It’s the iconoclastic voice in my head.

And then the ironic voice says ” Yes…and which institution would you prefer?  Your own?”

And then a voice just said ” Guys, let’s have a coffee and stop arguing”.  Shades of Gary Green.

But the beauty of the indie spirit…is that it will always arise…elsewhere.  Like a phoenix.

And at the moment, that place…is definitely Kino.

Diversity, of course, is the magic.  And from philosophical and questioning essays on happiness to giving head to a church steeple…there was certainly a variety of themes.

Plus some lovely EMO music from a guy called “There are no sheep in Mongolia”.

Interestingly…I liked Marianne’s happiness film…because to me…it said…happiness is doing what you love to do.

And whether the doing is making films for Kino….or collecting stamps….or climbing Mount Everest…or bringing up babies…or being a porn star….or whatever….

Maybe that’s true…maybe the trick to happiness is finding what you love doing…and then doing it.

It might be as simple…and as challenging as that.

I did like the other films too…but my bent is analytical and intellectual.  So when someone gives me a concept to consider…I’m highly appreciative.

The animation from Montreal ( Charade) was a juxtaposition of breathtaking beauty set on wall tiles that needed “Exit Mould”.  Impressive.  Very.

My neon animation THE POPULIST ADVENTURES of JESUS screened.

I believe it went down well.

 Funniness plus Jesus.

Who could go wrong with that combination?
