Last night, at Kino (Sydney) #5 …my neon animation THE ATOMIC ADVENTURES OF JACK KEROUAC was screened. The band Meat Pig ( writers/performers of the excellent song Neutron Betty, around which I built the narrative of the film)…also played.

A brilliant night. The other films were fascinating and many were a hoot.
Matt…the host and one of the organisers of Kino (Sydney)…was both fun and strict…in equal measure…and simultaneously entertained and educated us…in film…
And the spirit of Kino enveloped us all.
What’s Kino?
A loose network of filmmaker collectives in various cities around the world.
Cities that include Montreal and Manchester. And others. And at Kino nights short films are screened… that are mostly specifically made for Kino…( but others are included too…it’s not that strict…)….So Montreal Kino films, Manchester Kino films (etc) are interspersed with Sydney ones…plus one or two from elsewhere. Anywhere, really.
The vibe is free and easy. And indie.
And I love it.
If you’re an indie filmmaker…then KINO is the place for you. You’re free to make whatever you want…and also get to see what others worldwide are creating. Plus it’s a cool place to find collaborators…actors/musicians/lighting guys….all sorts of artists…in a hip but friendly atmosphere with endless wine and sushi.
Also…challenges are set…by consensus of everyone there… for those filmmakers….who need ideas to get started….Last night one of the challenges we watched was…where in Kino#4, the filmmaker had been given “exploitation & butter”… as ideas to incorporate….his film was a daring insight into the world of a butter fetishist.
Ah… a glimpse into the world of fetishes. Who could ask for more?
Congratulations to Matt & Marie-Anne…
It was..well…I know I sound like a kid but…it was FUN.
( If anyone wants to know more about Kino… I can get you in contact with Matt/Marie-Anne…for more info)

Actually, Nick….I’m thinking about doing THE ADVENTURES of GEORGE ORWELL….
Let’s see…
What a coincidence, Jack. On Monday, as it was Orwell’s birthday, I spent the evening reading Animal Farm out loud with a lady-friend. I guess we both have political satire on our minds.
